Dan Romer ’04, a graduate of the Purchase College Conservatory of Music’s studio production program, wrote the score for a film that won prizes at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.
Beasts of the Southern Wild, the debut film by Benh Zeitlin, received both the “Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic” and “The Excellence in Cinematography Award: US Dramatic” at Sundance on January 28. On May 27, the film received the honor Caméra d’Or, the prize for best first film at Cannes.
Manohla Dargis hailed the film in the New York Times as, “the standout of this year’s Sundance and among the best films to play at the festival in two decades…,” while the score drew praise by others as “magnificent” and “outstanding.”
Dan Romer is a record producer, mixer, songwriter, and arranger based in Brooklyn, NY. His past credits include scoring two award-winning short films, Death to the Tinman and Glory at Sea, as well as a Google Chrome commercial and a series of official Obama 2008 presidential campaign commercials. He’s also produced albums for several new artists such as Jenny Owen Youngs, Ian Axel, He is We, April Smith, Lelia Broussard, Cara Salimando, and Jukebox the Ghost. He is quickly establishing a name for himself as an in-demand producer/co-writer and one of the leading up-and-coming production talents in New York.
Professor of Music Jim McElwaine remembers Dan’s time as a Purchase College student:
“Dan worked hard at mastering the craft of composition. Like many young artists, he always started from a simple event or personal feeling in his songs and productions, but then he learned to expand his characters and ideas outward—his lyrics, melodies, harmonies, and forms. He discovered, like many good writers do, that the flow outward is really a more expressive reach inward. That inner transformation was what made his beautiful—to him, to his peers, to his listeners, and to his mentors—it made his music even more inviting and expressive.
“By the time Dan completed his master’s level private study, I was learning just as much from him as he was from me.”
Fox Searchlight acquired the film last winter; look for it in theaters July 5.
