SUNY Purchase Students Spend Summer Abroad Studying in India

Experience Dharamsala, India through the photos of  SUNY Purchase College students studying abroad this summer.

Dharamsala is in the northeastern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, a state known for its mountains and valleys, hill stations, old princely states, local village cultures, and it is the center of the Tibetan culture in exile. Since China claimed Tibetan territories, the Tibet government including His Holiness the Dalai Lamai have been in in Dharamsala. Tucked in the highlands of the Indian Himalayas it has a mystic air for both its heavenly location and its Buddhist residents.

The program provides students the opportunity to experience the energy of Tibet’s Buddhist teaching and artistic life as it adapts its traditions to the challenges of exile. Classes are held at the Norbulingka Institute for teaching and preserving Tibet’s artistic culture; it’s one of few study abroad programs in that part of India.
