New York Live Arts Selects SUNY Purchase Alum Kyle Abraham ’00 as Resident Artist

New York Live Arts announced earlier this month that dancer, choreographer, and SUNY Purchase alum Kyle Abraham BFA ’00 will be their next Resident Commissioned Artist for 2012-2014.

“Kyle is among a group of artists who are expanding the notion of what embodied investigation can be in the choreographic field,” Bill T. Jones, the executive artistic director of New York Live Arts, said in a statement. “With his residency, we hope that he will have the support he needs to continue to develop his choreographic voice.”The invitation-only program was created in 2011 to address the lack of support for mid-career artists. Abraham will receive a salary, health benefits, two years of residency time, and commission of a new work to premiere at New York Live Arts, the organization founded in 2011 when the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company merged with the Dance Theater Workshop.Abraham is artistic director of Abraham.In.Motion and has earned tremendous critical acclaim recently, including the 2012 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award as well as a 2010 Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance in Dance for his work in The Radio Show, a 2010 Princess Grace Award for Choreography, a BUILD grant and an individual artist fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant. He was selected in 2009 as one of Dance Magazine’s 25 To Watch.
