Purchase College Celebrates Clean & Green Day 2013

The Purchase College tradition of planting a tree every April continued today at the eighth annual Clean & Green Day. The blue sky and balmy temperatures were perfect for staff and faculty to get dirty and beautify the campus.

This year, the Beautification Committee, led by Chair Eric Wildrick, chose to concentrate their efforts on the area around the Admissions and Human Resources Buildings. New shrubs, containers with flowers, and a door mat spruce up the entrance to the Admissions Building, while a stunning Magnolia tree now sits alongside the path from the admissions parking lot.

The Beautification Committee chose the site to plant the tree with purpose. “As visitors walk up the path from the parking lot, they see the back of the Human Resources Building. This will help draw their attention to something more aesthetically pleasing,” explains Wildrick. The tree will eventually grow to 8–10 feet.

Wildrick, assistant professor of art+design, appreciates everyone’s support. In particular, the committee relies on the expertise of Chris Gavlick, director of facilities management and capital facilities planning, in selecting the species of tree while the facilities management staff work to prepare the sites for Clean & Green Day. “They’ve been really fun to work with and this year we did more greening than cleaning,” says Wildrick.

He’s also grateful to President Tom Schwarz who, with gleaming ceremonial shovel in hand, is always the first to scoop soil under the tree. “Tom is always a huge supporter.”
